This weekend, two members of our team, Coach Rowan and Program Coordinator Bree, will take on the Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race in Cumberland, putting their endurance, teamwork and adventure skills to the test while raising funds for Whistler Adaptive.
On Saturday, September 19, Rowan and Bree will compete in the Sport 30K category, tackling 5K of paddling, 15K of mountain biking and 10K of trekking through the Cumberland landscape.
While they’ll be taking on the race as a personal challenge, they’re also using the opportunity to raise funds for Whistler Adaptive and help remove barriers to adventure for people with disabilities and neurodivergence.
Adventure for a purpose
Adventure is a big part of life at Whistler Adaptive, and both Rowan and Bree see firsthand the difference that access to sport and recreation can make.
As a Whistler Adaptive Coach, Rowan helps participants experience the challenge, freedom and connection that sport and recreation can provide. For Rowan, taking on Mind Over Mountain is a chance to put that same spirit of adventure into action.
“Adventure is a big part of why I love being a coach at Whistler Adaptive, so taking on the Mind Over Mountain race felt like a great opportunity to challenge myself while supporting an organisation I’m proud to be part of. We’re going to have to work together across the paddle, mountain bike and trek, and hopefully have a lot of fun along the way. It’s great to be able to turn our own adventure into an opportunity to help create more adventures for others.”
— Rowan, Whistler Adaptive Coach
As a Program Coordinator, Bree plays a key role in creating the programs and opportunities that enable participants to get involved in sport and recreation. For her, the race is an opportunity to step outside her comfort zone while supporting the community she works with every day.
“Working at Whistler Adaptive, I get to see how much sport and recreation can bring to people’s lives. I wanted to take on this challenge with Rowan because it’s a fun way to put ourselves outside our comfort zones while raising money for the programs and opportunities we care about every day. We’re looking forward to getting out there, getting stuck in and hopefully raising some funds along the way!”
